The Seven Summits is a mountaineering achievement of climbing the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Dick Bass, a wealthy American businessman was the first person to achieve the Seven Summits in April 1985.
Approximately 200 people have successfully summited all seven mountains.
Everest
Everest is the highest mountain on Earth. The first ascent to the summit of Everest was on 29 May 1953 by Sir Edmund Hilary and his sherpa Tenzig Norgay. They were part of the ninth British attempt to reach the summit and were the second pair to attempt the summit in their party of four.
